Freedom Friday: The Freedom Found in Forgiveness

“If the cruelties of slavery could not stop us, the opposition we now face will surely fail. Because the goal of America is freedom, abused and scorned though we may be, our destiny is tied up with America’s destiny.”— Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

How do these words resonate with you today?

Before you continue, pause for a moment:

-Take a deep breath in… and exhale slowly.

-Again… inhale deeply… exhale completely.

-One more time… breathe in possibility… and release what no longer serves you.

Allow yourself to become fully present.

Today, as we honor Juneteenth, we recognize a powerful milestone in American history—the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. We remember the sacrifices of those who came before us, celebrate the resilience and contributions of the Black community, and recommit ourselves to creating a future rooted in freedom, equity, dignity, and belonging for all.

As a coach, I often invite clients to explore the relationship between freedom and forgiveness:

  • Freedom is not only a historical pursuit—it is also a personal one.

  • Freedom can look like forgiving yourself for past mistakes.

  • Freedom can look like accepting what cannot be changed.

  • Freedom can look like taking ownership of your next step.

  • Freedom can look like trusting yourself again.

  • Freedom can look like leading with humility instead of fear.

As leaders, influencers, and changemakers, we are called to examine not only the systems around us, but also the narratives within us.

Consider these reflective questions:

• What belief, resentment, or regret am I ready to release?

• Where might forgiveness create space for growth, healing, or renewed purpose?

• What responsibility am I being called to own without blame or shame?

• How would my leadership change if I fully trusted my capacity to navigate uncertainty?

• What future becomes possible when I shift my perception from limitation to possibility?

Inspired by Gay Hendricks’ A Year of Living Consciously:

  • What, with all your heart, do you most want to know?

  • What, with all your heart, do you most need to learn?

  • What, with all your heart, do you most want to contribute?

“My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.”— Desmond Tutu

As we navigate challenging times marked by division, uncertainty, and economic pressures, may we remember that progress begins with awareness, courage, and intentional action.

Take a moment today to free yourself from something that no longer aligns with who you are becoming—and encourage someone else to do the same.

Freedom begins the moment forgiveness meets purpose.
