Monday Madness: Forgiveness Creates Space for Understanding

In a world that often encourages division, comparison, and judgment, forgiveness invites us to lead differently.
As coaches, leaders, and influencers, we encounter people whose experiences, beliefs, perspectives, and journeys may look very different from our own. The challenge is not learning how to agree with everyone. The challenge is learning how to honor differences without making them wrong.
Iyanla Vanzant reminds us that people are different—and different is not right or wrong. Differences become barriers when we use them to measure who is more right, more worthy, or more deserving of being heard.
Research on inclusive leadership continues to demonstrate that organizations perform better when leaders create environments where diverse perspectives are welcomed, respected, and leveraged. Teams thrive when people feel psychologically safe enough to contribute their unique experiences, ideas, and viewpoints.
From an ICF coaching perspective, cultivating awareness, maintaining presence, and fostering trust require us to listen beyond our assumptions and remain curious about what we do not yet understand.
As we continue our June focus on forgiveness, perhaps the invitation is not simply to forgive others—but to release the need for sameness.
Consider reflecting on these questions:
Where might I be judging a difference rather than seeking to understand it?
What perspective have I dismissed because it challenged my own?
How can I demonstrate greater humility, trust, and curiosity in my leadership this
week?
What would become possible for my team, organization, or relationships if understanding became more important than agreement?
Forgiveness is not about abandoning your values. It is about creating enough space for humanity, accountability, and respect to coexist.
