Monday Madness | The Leadership Pause
Stop for a moment—right where you are.
Relax your shoulders...
Roll your neck...
Shake out the tension in your spine...
Now tell that imperious voice in your head to be still.
“Stop a minute, right where you are… Tell that imperious voice in your head to be still.”
— Barbara Kingsolver
In today’s fast-moving, politically charged, and often uncertain environment, leaders are constantly being pulled to react faster, decide quicker, and carry more.
But the most effective leaders I coach are discovering something powerful:
Calm is not passive. Calm is strategic leadership.
Our internal state shapes the energy of every conversation, every decision, and every room we walk into.
As Marianne Williamson reminds us:
“Everything we do is infused with the energy with which we do it. If we’re frantic, life will be frantic. If we’re peaceful, life will be peaceful.”
Leadership research reinforces this idea. Leaders who regulate themselves under pressure help stabilize teams, improve decision quality, and create psychological safety during uncertain moments.
Sometimes the most powerful leadership tool is not another strategy.
It’s a pause.
Neuroscientist Jill Bolte Taylor captures it beautifully:
“To experience peace does not mean that your life is always blissful. It means that you are capable of tapping into a blissful state of mind amidst the normal chaos of a hectic life.”
From a coaching perspective, I often invite leaders to practice what I call The Leadership Pause.
A simple reset before responding:
• Pause
• Take one intentional breath
• Lower your shoulders
• Ask yourself: What truly requires my leadership right now?
That small moment of awareness can shift not only your mindset—but the energy of the entire room.
A few reflective questions for leaders and teams this week:
• When pressure rises, what energy do you bring into the room?
• How aware are you of your leadership presence during moments of stress?
• What practices help you regulate before reacting?
• How might your team benefit if calm became your leadership default?
• Where could a strategic pause create clarity this week?
Leadership Challenge for the Week
Before your next high-stakes meeting or difficult conversation, try The Leadership Pause:
Take one breath.
Relax your shoulders.
Ask yourself: What does this moment require from me as a leader?
Then notice what shifts—in you and in the room.
**If you try it this week, share your experience in the comments. What changed?
In recognition of Women’s History Month, I’m reminded that many of the most influential women leaders in history led not through noise—but through composure, clarity, and courage in the face of adversity.
And right now, the world needs more leaders who can steady the room.
This week’s reminder:
In chaotic times, the calmest leader often becomes the clearest compass.
