Freedom Friday: The Leadership Discipline of Listening
“To be kind is more important than to be right… Many times what people need is not a brilliant mind that speaks, but a special heart that listens.”
In a world that rewards quick responses, strong opinions, and being “right,” there is a quieter, more powerful leadership discipline: intentional listening.
Not performative listening.
Not listening to reply.
But listening to understand.
As leaders, coaches, and influencers, how often are we truly present in conversation?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) identifies Active Listening as a core competency—not just hearing words, but fully engaging with what is said, what is not said, and what is felt.
Three Levels of Listening (A Coaching Lens):
Level I: Internal Listening
Your attention is inward.
You’re filtering through your own thoughts, judgments, and experiences.
“What do I think about this?”
Level II: Focused Listening
Your attention is fully on the other person.
You notice tone, body language, emotion, and meaning.
“What are they really communicating?”
Level III: Global Listening
Your awareness expands beyond words.
You sense energy, shifts, environment, and what remains unspoken.
“What is emerging here?”
Pause & Reflect:
Where do you spend most of your listening time—Level I, II, or III?
How does your listening shift across environments: boardroom, home, community?
What might your team, clients, or colleagues say about how heard they feel in your presence?
When was the last time you listened without the intent to fix, solve, or respond?
A Freedom Friday Challenge:
Today, practice listening as an act of leadership and humanity:
Be fully present—eliminate distractions
Maintain eye contact and grounded body language
Reflect and paraphrase for clarity (“What I’m hearing is…”)
Notice emotional cues beneath the words
Suspend judgment—create space, not solutions
This is how trust is built.
This is how psychological safety is cultivated.
This is how influence deepens—without force.
Because often, people don’t need more advice…
They need to feel seen, heard, and valued.
Leadership Insight:
Research consistently reinforces that leaders who prioritize listening foster stronger engagement, higher trust, and more innovative teams. Listening is not passive—it is a strategic capability.
How are you intentionally strengthening your listening muscle—in leadership and in life?
What shifts when you choose curiosity over certainty?
In a world full of noise, your ability to truly listen is your greatest act of leadership—and your quietest form of power.
