“Freedom Friday: The Power of Composed Leadership in Unsettled Times”

“Courtesy dictates that we offer fellow wizards the opportunity of denying us entry.”

— J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Good Day, Fellow Leaders,

Let’s pause—intentionally.

-Take a deep breath in…

-Exhale slowly…

-Again… inhale…

-And release…

This is where leadership begins: in the space between stimulus and response.

Rowling’s words, while whimsical, offer a profound leadership truth:

Respect is not dependent on reciprocity—it is a reflection of self-mastery.

In today’s politically charged and emotionally heightened environment, many leaders are navigating increased tension, reactivity, and incivility across teams, organizations, and communities.

So the real question becomes:

Who are you choosing to be when challenged?

A Coaching Perspective: From Reaction to Intentional Response

As a PCC, I often partner with leaders to strengthen emotional regulation, executive presence, and conscious communication—especially under pressure.

Rudeness, dismissiveness, or hostility from others can easily trigger a vicious cycle:

Trigger → Emotional Reaction → Escalation → Regret

But intentional leaders cultivate a virtuous cycle:

Trigger → Pause → Reflect → Respond with Purpose → Strengthened Influence

The distinction?

Awareness + Choice.

Reflective Questions for You & Your Team:

  • When faced with incivility, what is your default response pattern?

  • How do you create space between what you feel and how you act?

  • What does “professional composure” look like in action for you?

  • How might your response either escalate—or de-escalate—a situation?

  • What values are you committed to embodying, even when others are not?

Leadership Insight:

Maintaining composure is not about suppression—it’s about alignment.

It’s choosing to:

  • Lead with emotional intelligence over ego

  • Respond with clarity instead of reactivity

  • Model the behavior you want to see, even when it’s not mirrored back

Because ultimately, your response is your reputation in motion.

Perspective & Research:

Grounded in leadership and behavioral science:

  • Harvard Business Review highlights that leaders who regulate emotions under pressure enhance decision-making and team trust.

(“Leadership Under Pressure: 3 Strategies for Keeping Calm”)

  • Healthline outlines evidence-based techniques—like breathwork and cognitive reframing—to reduce anxiety and anger in real time.

  • Psychology Today emphasizes that responding to rudeness with calm assertiveness often diffuses conflict and preserves dignity.

Freedom Friday Challenge:

Today, practice intentional restraint.

The next time you encounter negativity, ask yourself:

“What response aligns with the leader I say I am?”

Then choose that—deliberately.

“Your power isn’t in the reaction you give—it’s in the response you choose.”
