Freedom Friday: Growth, Self-Love & Perspective
“Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one.”
— Eleanor Roosevelt
Take a moment before reading further…
Take a deep breath in…
Exhale slowly…
Again… breathe in… and release...
Now ask yourself:
What do you hear in Eleanor Roosevelt’s words?
What does it mean for you — as a leader, colleague, partner, or human being — to fully own your individuality?
In coaching conversations with leaders across industries, one theme consistently surfaces: self-awareness and self-worth are foundational to authentic leadership.
At the heart of both is something we don’t talk about enough in professional spaces:
Self-love.
Self-love | noun
A regard for one’s own well-being and happiness — not as narcissism, but as a healthy recognition of inherent worth.
Self-love means:
• Having a high regard for your well-being and happiness
• Taking care of your needs without apology
• Setting healthy boundaries
• Accepting both your strengths and your areas for growth
• Refusing to settle for less than you deserve
Leadership research and coaching practice reinforce this truth: the way we lead others is deeply influenced by the relationship we have with ourselves.
When leaders cultivate self-love:
• Decision-making becomes values-driven rather than fear-driven
• Confidence and resilience increase
• Psychological safety and empathy grow within teams
• Authenticity replaces performance and pretense
In other words, how you show up for yourself shapes how you show up for others.
So let’s reflect for a moment.
Coaching Reflection Questions
• What do you love most about yourself?
• What strengths or values define who you are at your core?
• What does self-love look like in your daily leadership practices?
• Where might you need stronger boundaries to protect your well-being?
• How might practicing more compassion toward yourself influence how you lead others?
Today’s Freedom Friday Challenge:
*Start a meaningful conversation with at least three people today. Ask them:
• What does self-love mean to you?
• What do you love most about yourself?
• How do you practice unconditional care for the people closest to you?
• What do you do to restore yourself when life feels heavy?
*You may be surprised by what you learn.
These conversations deepen connection, expand perspective, and create space for authenticity — something many leaders and teams are craving right now.
As poet Nikki Giovanni reminds us:
“Once you know who you are, you don’t have to worry anymore.”
So today, choose curiosity.
Choose compassion.
Choose growth.
Be intentional and watch what happens.
Encourage others to do the same.
You’ve got this!
