“No one can win war individually...  It takes the wisdom of the elders and young people’s energy... One day when the glory comes it will be ours...”

How do the words above resonate with you?

Pause here for a moment and free yourself from distractions: ...Take a deep breath in...  exhale slowly...  deep breath in...  exhale slowly...  deep breath in...  exhale slowly...  calm your mind and be present...

The words above are lyrics taken from the featured song Glory, performed by John Legend and Common in the film Selma.  This historical drama takes us back to 1960s south, Alabama, and the fight for civil rights:

Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

If you have not seen the move Selma, released in 2014, directed by Ava DuVernay, I highly recommend it. It will open up good conversation and put some historical perspective to the current protests and movements around the country, continuing the fight for equal justice.

Is history repeating itself?  Think about that for a moment...

Gandhi called nonviolent action “the greatest and most active force in the world.” What do you think about nonviolence as a strategy to make change?

...be honest with your thoughts...

What event triggers awareness to the situation of Civil Rights in Alabama?  What event triggered our present day situation? ...there might be more than one... think about it...

Why were voting rights so important to the Civil Rights movement (why would people risk their lives to stand up for the right to vote)? How important are voting rights to you today? why...

What is the most effective way to try to change these issues?

Think about it... what does glory look like for you... what are you willing to do..?

Don’t miss your opportunity.  Be intentional encourage others to do the same and watch what happens.

You got this!
