Freedom Friday | Faith Beyond the Security Blanket
“Hope is the belief that the future can be better than today, and that we have the power to make it.”— Chan Hellman, PhD
As August comes to a close, many of us are carrying a lot.
Students and parents are adjusting to new routines. Leaders are navigating quarterly deadlines. Professionals are managing competing priorities. And with the holiday season just around the corner, the pace isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
So perhaps this is a good moment to pause:
-Take a breath in…Exhale slowly…
-Again.
-Breathe in…And release.
Now ask yourself:
What am I holding onto because it feels safe—even though it may no longer be serving me?
Sometimes our “security blanket” looks like procrastination.
Sometimes it looks like indecision, perfectionism, overthinking, people-pleasing, staying silent, or waiting for the “right” time.
And sometimes, it simply looks like fear disguised as certainty.
But here’s the coaching invitation:
What if faith isn’t about knowing exactly how everything will work out?
What if faith invites us to acknowledge what is true, become curious about what is possible, and take the next intentional step anyway?
Research on hope reminds us that hope is not passive wishing. It involves identifying meaningful goals, generating pathways forward, and believing we have agency to take action—even when obstacles arise. (American Psychological Association)
That sounds a lot like leadership.
That sounds like growth.
And sometimes, that sounds like faith.
Your Freedom Friday Reflection:
Before you move into another busy week, consider:
What “security blanket” am I ready to release—or redefine?
What possibility am I being called to consider that requires me to move beyond certainty?
What is one courageous, values-aligned action I can take before Monday?
And if you’re a leader, consider asking your team:
Where might we be choosing comfort over possibility?
What would become possible if we replaced “What if it doesn’t work?” with “What might we learn if we try?”
Faith does not require us to ignore reality.
It invites us to believe that reality does not have to be the final word.
As you close this week, give yourself permission to release what has become a limitation, reconnect with what matters, and take the next step with intention.
You don’t have to see the whole path. Sometimes faith is simply having enough courage to take the next step.
You got this!
