Wednesday Wisdom | Accountability is the Growth Edge

“As long as you can find someone else to blame for anything you are doing, you cannot be held accountable or responsible for your growth or the lack of it.” — Sun Bear

Pause for a moment...

-Breathe in…

-Exhale slowly…

-Again… inhale…

-And release.

Now ask yourself:

Where might I be outsourcing ownership in my life or leadership right now?

From a coaching perspective, accountability is not about blame—it’s about agency. It’s the conscious choice to step into ownership of our thoughts, decisions, and actions.

Accountability + Responsibility = Sustainable Growth

Growth is not accidental. It’s intentional, iterative, and requires self-awareness.

When we default to blame—whether toward others, circumstances, or even ourselves—we disengage from our own capacity to lead change. We give away influence that is rightfully ours.

As Iyanla Vanzant reminds us in Acts of Faith:

“The only thing holding us in place right now are the things we do not do.”

That insight invites a powerful reframe:

What am I not doing that could move me forward?

And from A Year of Living Consciously, Gay Hendricks offers a practical leadership shift:

Turn complaints into requests—or into action.

So let’s operationalize that:

  • What are the top 1–2 complaints you’ve voiced recently?

  • What specific request could you make instead?

  • What immediate action is within your control?

This is the essence of self-leadership—a core competency for any executive, team leader, or change agent.

As Henry Ford put it:

“Don’t find fault… find a remedy.”

Coaching Reflection for You & Your Team:

  • Where are you fully accountable—and where are you avoiding it?

  • What narrative are you telling yourself that may be limiting your ownership?

  • How can you model accountability in a way that empowers—not pressures—others?

  • What does “taking responsibility” look like in action today?

Call to Action:

Today, choose one area where you will replace blame with ownership.

  • Name it.

  • Act on it.

  • Follow through.

Then invite your team to do the same—and notice how quickly the culture begins to shift.

Closing Thought:

In a politically charged and often uncertain environment, your power is not in controlling circumstancesit’s in choosing your response with intention and integrity.

“When you own your choices, you reclaim your power—no matter the noise around you.”
