Wednesday’s Wisdom

Leading with Love in a Divided and Demanding World

Love is patient, love is kind…” — 1 Corinthians 13:4–8 (NIV)

In a politically charged climate, amid winter’s literal and metaphorical storms, leadership is being tested. Not just operationally—but relationally.

As a PCC, I often invite leaders to expand their definition of “love.” Not sentimentality. Not passivity. But a disciplined leadership stance rooted in emotional intelligence, accountability, compassion, and truth.

What if we led with that kind of love?

Love that:

  • Practices self-regulation under pressure

  • Creates psychological safety in uncertainty

  • Chooses curiosity over judgment

  • Holds boundaries without hostility

  • Perseveres when morale is low

This is not soft leadership. It is strategic, conscious leadership.

Research and thought leadership increasingly affirm that love-based leadership fosters trust, engagement, and sustainable performance.

In The Transformative Power of Love in Leadership by Terre Short, love is positioned as a catalytic force for authenticity and human-centered impact.

Similarly, Self-Love for Leaders (Medium) emphasizes the intrapersonal work required before leading others effectively.

Mindful Leadership: Is There a Place for Love at Work? (Centers for Integrative Health) explores how compassion-based practices improve resilience and workplace culture.

Mitchell Levy’s article, Love in Leadership: Value or Liability?, reframes love as a competitive advantage rather than a liability.

The evidence is clear:

Leaders who cultivate compassion, boundaries, and courage outperform those who lead from fear or ego.

Pause With Intention

Deep breath in…

Slow exhale…

Deep breath in…

Slow exhale…

Presence is a leadership competency.

A Few Rules to Live — and Lead — By

  1. Teach people how to treat you.

What boundaries have you clearly articulated this year?

  2. Don’t sell yourself short for companionship or approval.

Where might you be compromising your values for belonging?

  3. Be an example, not a statistic.

What legacy are your daily micro-decisions building?

  4. No MUST mean no.

→ How consistently do you honor your own limits?

  5. Find love on your level.

→ Are you surrounding yourself with growth-minded leaders—or comfort-driven ones?

  6. Love like you believe the best is yet to come.

What would hope-driven leadership look like in your organization right now?

Reflective Coaching Questions for You and Your Team

  • How do the words patient, kind, not self-seeking, persevering resonate with your current leadership posture?

  • When tension rises—politically, socially, organizationally—what default pattern do you fall into?

  • What is one courageous conversation you’ve been postponing that love would require you to have?

  • What three principles do you wish your younger self had internalized sooner?

  • What leadership identity are you stepping into next?

Leadership is not about being right; it’s about being responsible for the energy you bring into every room.

In seasons of volatility—economic, political, environmental—love becomes both stabilizer and compass.

Not naïve love.

Not permissive love.

But accountable, truth-centered, resilient love.

Lead with love — because steady hearts build steady organizations.
