Monday Madness | Understanding Begins Within

How do these words resonate with you?
Before you continue reading, I invite you to pause…
-Take a deep breath in…
-and slowly exhale.
-Again… breathe in… and exhale.
-One more time… breathe in… and exhale.
Allow yourself to become fully present.
As we continue embracing July’s theme of Understanding, I invite you to begin with the one place where understanding has the greatest opportunity to grow—within ourselves.
The Ashanti people are an ethnic group of present-day Ghana in West Africa whose rich cultural heritage has long emphasized community, responsibility, wisdom, and collective well-being. Their proverbs continue to offer timeless insights that transcend geography and generation. While this wisdom is rooted in the Ashanti tradition, its message speaks to all of us.
At the same time, many people of color continue to navigate environments where they feel unseen, unheard, undervalued, or psychologically unsafe. That reality makes the invitation to cultivate understanding, dignity, and belonging—beginning in our homes, our workplaces, and our communities—not only meaningful, but essential for all of us.
Each of us is part of this nation—part of something far greater than ourselves. Sometimes we forget just how significant our individual presence and influence truly are.
In Until Today, Iyanla Vanzant reminds us:
“What you do, how you do it, and when you do it affects every person in front of you and every person coming behind you.”
As I reflected on those words, I was reminded that in today’s politically charged and economically challenging environment, understanding is more than kindness—it is a leadership practice.
As coaches, leaders, parents, partners, colleagues, and neighbors, we each have the opportunity to create environments where people feel seen, heard, respected, and valued.
That begins with us.
Today’s Reflection:

In coaching, understanding begins with awareness.
Before we can effectively lead others, we must first understand ourselves—our values, assumptions, beliefs, emotions, and the impact our words and behaviors have on those around us.
Imagine what could change if we replaced:
-Assumptions with curiosity…
-Judgment with understanding…
-Reaction with intentionality…
The Ashanti proverb reminds us that lasting transformation begins close to home.
Whether your “home” is your family, your workplace, your team, your neighborhood, or your community, ask yourself:
What helps people feel genuinely seen, heard, and valued in my presence?
Where might greater understanding strengthen trust, connection, or collaboration?
What assumptions am I holding that deserve curiosity instead of certainty?
How do my daily choices contribute to the culture I hope to create?
Don’t underestimate the influence you have.
-Every interaction leaves an imprint.
-Every conversation creates possibility.
-Every act of understanding strengthens the culture around you.
